Loose mineral make up uses a range of micronized mica-based pigments and blends of metal oxides such as zinc-oxide, iron oxide, titanium oxides, as well as other inorganic pigments – however, the best mineral make up companies will exclude the use of micas that are coated and blended with artificial dyes. Some companies may use other inorganic pigments besides the metallic oxides. The best companies will eliminate the use of artificial dyes and pigments as far as possible, especially the petroleum-based food and drug colours (f&dc). The ultramarine pigment is also used occasionally in loose mineral make up - although technically all minerals used in make up are clarified to remove toxins, ultramarine is generally a synthesized pigment. But it is important to remember that chemically it is the same as the naturally occurring ultramarine (lapis lazuli) pigment.

Ferric Ferrocyanide (Prussian blue) can also be used – although it has some environmental stigma and is combined with salts, it is still deemed completely safe for use in mineral make up. It should be manufactured in such a way that it meets the standards set by both the US FDA and the EU Cosmetics Directive – if you are interested, it is always worth checking out the company’s FAQ page, or contacting them directly. If you would rather not use products that contain Ferric Ferrocyanide, the best companies always clearly label the ingredients on each of their products to allow you to make informed decisions.

Even if you choose to omit these ingredients from your mineral cosmetic range, there is still an absolute plethora of colours available, from earthy natural and pastel tones through to shimmery, pearlescent and iridescent vibrant hues. The titanium oxide used in the make up also acts as a natural sunscreen against UVA and UVB rays, thus to an extent protecting the skin from the ageing and damaging day-to-day effects caused by exposure to the sun.
