Mineral Eye Makeup

Mineral Eye Makeup

Mineral makeup offers an infinite array of colors for highlighting and defining your eyes. Not only is it possible to achieve rich, vibrant colors, you can also choose from a variety of finishes from simple matte to exotic sparkles. Mineral eye makeup has the advantage of being made from naturally-derived ingredients for your eyes. For people with sensitive skin or eyes, mineral eye makeup is an excellent option. In some cases people with sensitive skin or allergies have reported reactions to mica or bismuth oxychloride, so always check the labels carefully and either avoid these ingredients or get a sample to test before purchasing.

Pure loose mineral eye makeup (sometimes labelled as ‘multi use mineral makeup’) alone may not be as lasting as what you have previously used, but there are different ways to apply both eye and foundation minerals to use that solve this problem. Using an eyeliner sealant or other product specifically for this purpose across the entire eyelid before applying color creates better adhesion of the mineral eye makeup. These products also prevent eye shadow creasing for people with oilier skin. Using a mineral ‘base’, ‘primer’ or ‘veil’ will help with adhesion, as will mineral eye shadows that contain ingredients such as silica and boron nitride. Basically the larger, more sparkly mineral particles do not have as good adhesion and slip as the smoother and smaller blends, thus will probably require a base to ensure longevity.

You may apply mineral eye makeup either wet or dry. Using different tools and methods to apply mineral eye makeup varies the shade, intensity, and shimmer of the eye shadow. Use a dry eyeshadow brush to create a sheer color on your eyelids. Use a sponge to apply eyeshadow to achieve a more intense color. Use a taklon brush to apply wet mineral eye makeup for “foiling”.

When you apply mineral eye makeup wet, it is referred to as “foiling.” Foiling is an excellent technique for achieving bolder colors with your eye shadow and works very well for eyelining as well. It’s quite easy–mix your mineral eye makeup with water or primer until you get a creamy consistency. Then apply normally. In some cases you can apply the mineral eye shadow over the entire eye area dry and then wet the eye shadow brush, squeeze out the excess, and dip it into the dry eye shadow again and reapply to the lid only. This application will give more intense version of the same color and a different effect to the eyelid. For a more natural look simply apply mineral makeup base color or bronzer either dry or wet over eyelids for a subtle change of the natural color.

You can even vary the look of your eyeliner, eyebrows, and mascara using different methods of application. Using a dry eyeliner brush with a darker shade or contrast color will give a softer liner look. Or for “wet lining” mix the color with water or an eyeliner sealant before applying with the eyeliner brush for a darker more defined liner that will last all day. Choose a color that is a close match to your natural brow color and use a brow brush to brush in the color to fill in and shape your brows. You can even change your mascara or brow color to subtly match your eyelids by dipping the brush into a small amount of the mineral eye shadow you are using.

A great thing about mineral makeup is that since it is made from non-organic naturally-derived ingredients almost all of the mineral makeup is safe for use on the eyes. So using the methods described here you can apply foundation, blushers, rouges, and even body shimmers as eyeshadows! Check the labels and then enjoy experimenting to achieve the perfect effect for you.
